Protect Your Investment in New Countertops

New countertops from Mainland Stoneworks are a beautiful addition to any home or commercial property. Like anything beautiful, new countertops require care and maintenance to keep looking fantastic for years to come.

The tips below address some of the most important issues in caring for your new countertops. For more information, please call us. Our knowledgeable staff will be glad to help you.

Caring for Natural Stone Countertops

  • Trivets — Most stone countertops can withstand heat, but using trivets or mats is recommended to avoid damage.
  • Coasters — Natural stone is porous, and it's prone to absorbing liquids. You should use coasters under any glass beverage container, particularly if it contains alcohol or citrus juice.
  • Sealing — It's important to note that sealing only makes a stone surface more stain resistant. It does not make the countertop completely stain proof.
  • Spills — In the event of a spill, blot the spill with a paper towel right away. Wiping the area will spread the spill and make it worse. Then flush the area with water and mild soap. Rinse it several times, and dry it thoroughly with a soft cloth. Repeat the process as much as necessary.
  • Cleaning — You should clean your stone countertops with warm water and a neutral cleaner, stone soap, or mild dishwashing detergent. Stone soap can be found at most big box stores. Be careful to avoid using too much soap, as it may leave a film or cause streaks. For the best cleaning results, follow the manufacturer's directions.
  • Soap scum — You can remove soap scum by using a non-acidic soap scum remover or a solution of ammonia and water.
  • Oil stains — An oil-based stain will darken your stone surface. The stain must be chemically dissolved to flush or rinse away the source of the stain.
  • Metal stains — A poultice is required to remove metal stains. Deep-seated rust stains can be extremely difficult to remove and may be permanent.

Caring for Quartz Countertops

  • Regular care — You can care for your quartz countertop by cleaning it regularly with a damp cloth or paper towel and warm water and soap. A mild non-bleach, non-abrasive cleanser may be used.
  • Stubborn or dried spills — Most stubborn or dried spills can be removed by using a non-abrasive cleaning pad and glass cleaner.
